Emmy-winning makeup artist Kevin James Bennett says foundations that are made with an additional touch of silicone allow these highly-pigmented bases to spread better than their counterparts without silicone. The result is a thinner application with a smoother coverage for a finish that’s totally flawless. Along with a group of beauty biz experts, he’s handpicked the brands that deliver the most consistent, superior results to help you find the one that suits you best.

Cinema Secret

When training pros at her Make Up First School of Makeup Artistry in Chicago, Jill Glaser opts for Ultimate Foundation by Cinema Secret. While you can buy individual colors by the pot, you can also buy them by the palette. Bennett knows the brand, and says he opts for the five-color palette. Nos. 1, 3, 7, 10 and 11 offer a variety of shades that you can blend to complement a rainbow of skin tones -- ideal for a cramped makeup kit or when you want a single product that can take you from season to season, Bennett says.

Face Atelier Ultra Foundation

Bennett says the creator of Face Atelier Ultra Foundation was a fan of Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk foundation who made her own improved formula that delivered the coverage and value she felt was missing in the luxury brand. The Face Altier has a built-in primer to give you a smooth finish. To achieve an exact color match, he suggests adding a drop of the brand’s color adjuster in Heat, Zero Minus or Zero Plus Plus as necessary.

Laura Mercier

Silk Creme Foundation by Laura Mercier is Atlanta makeup artist Scoobie West’s silicone foundation of choice. “I love the versatility of this foundation because it can cover the worst rosacea and make the clearest skin look dewy and fresh,” he says. To apply, use a foundation brush or sponge for a heavier coverage, or for less coverage, use a damp beauty blender brush or sponge and apply only where needed.

Make Up For Ever

New Jersey makeup artist Nicole Lundy uses the HD Invisible Color Foundation by Make Up For Ever when a silicone-based formula is in order. She says the oil-free formula offers amazing coverage for a flawless finish her clients love. It’s long-wearing too, “It gives all day coverage, so you’ll have makeup that lasts as long as you do throughout your day,” Lundy says.

Sarah McNamara Beauty

Makeup artist and author Michelle Phillips’ pick is Miracle Skin Transformer by Sarah McNamara Beauty. “It glides on the skin and creates an airbrushed look with a silky feel,” she says. The lightweight formula moisturizes as it protects with conditioning ingredients and SPF. Phillips says you can layer the product on days your skin calls for a little extra coverage.

Albany, NY makeup pro Genn Shaughnessy uses Temptu Pro Airbrush Foundation, which you can apply by hand or using an airbrush. The formula is her favorite for clients who seek a flawless finish without the weighed-down look foundation sometimes leaves. “This stuff looks 100 times better than any tinted moisturizer you've ever used, and it's naturally water-resistant,” she says. She warns that sensitive and acne-prone users should avoid daily use to give the skin ample breathing room, lest acne breakouts arise.
