Corsets (and their lookalike cousin, the bustier) grant any girl instant curves galore. They're ultrafeminine and more than a little dramatic and naughty, considering they started out as underwear and then took a turn into the fetish world before re-emerging into the mainstream. Corsets tend to err on the formal side, so it's natural to want to dress up the rest of your outfit accordingly. But does that mean high heels are de rigeuer, or do you have other options?
When To Wear Heels
You'll never go wrong pairing high heels and corsets; they're the classic, if conservative, choice. The higher and narrower the heel, the better -- especially if you're working the fetish angle. But even if you're not, a high heel is a good idea, especially if you're wearing a short skirt as part of your outfit. Your legs will look longer and shapelier. Open-toed or closed heels is your choice.
These Boots Are Made For . . .
Knee-high and thigh-high boots are another classic match with corsets, especially for club and fetish nights. But experiment with other boots, too. Platforms are a good bet. Tooled cowboy boots could also be a fun and funky anchor for your outfit.
A Big Skirt Hides A Million Sins
If you're wearing a corset under a full-length skirt -- perhaps for a wedding party or prom night -- high heels are a little beside the point. Feel free to don comfortable flats instead.
Taking It Casual
It's fun to take your corset in a more casual direction, pairing it with a flirty floral skirt or skinny jeans. With this look, you might try wearing wedges or espadrilles. You could probably even get away with thongs.
Tuxed In
Corsets look fantastic worn underneath a suit. You can either let the corset be the telling feminine detail and go for unisex shoes,or you can add heels to underscore your girliness. This look is sleek and sophisticated, formal without being stuffy.
