Short Hairstyles That Don't Fatten the Face

A short hairstyle is breezy and bold, as long as it doesn't have a chipmunk effect. While a long mane can slim your face by hiding the sides, a short crop leaves your face bare. Some styles even curl around your cheeks, making your face look rounder. And though a full face can be gorgeous, you want a haircut that's chic enough to make you look less like a chubby-faced 5-year-old and more like the stylish diva you really are.

Pixie Crop

If you have a strong jawline -- meaning a square or oval face, not round -- you have the luxury of trying the daring pixie cut. Once it's all cut off, you can make your face appear slimmer by tousling the top, for a sleek feathered look, a la Halle Berry. This makes the line from your chin to the top of your head appear longer. The sides above your ears should remain fairly flat against your head.

Short Shag

A shaggy pixie cut -- think Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan -- gives you extremely short hair with the versatility that a full face needs. Rather than a tomboy crop, this tousled style includes face-framing bangs and some waves around your ears. You can even cut some choppy layers into your hair, for a sexy bed-head finish that cuts the wideness of a full face.

Backwards Bob

To rock short hair without baring your whole face, you need a bob haircut, and the inverted bob is one of the most forgiving for full faces. Elegant celebs such as Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightley have showcased just how flattering this 'do is, whether your hair is stick straight or soft and wavy. It begins around the cheeks or chin in front, but dramatically tapers to a pixie cut in back, so you can cover the sides of your face in front but still rock the short look in back. Talk about sleek and chic.

Wispy Bob

If you have a bob haircut that falls to your chin, you need wispy layers and edgy fringe to diminish the facial fullness. This is especially true if your hair is straight. Bangs cut to just below your eyeline, swept to one side, draw attention to your cheekbones, and that gives a round face major definition. Round-faced Renee Zellweger has sported this 'do. A side part makes this style even more slimming.
