One of the best things about winter in most parts of the country is that women get to wear boots. Shopping for them is nearly as much fun, but it's best to go armed with a focus on what you are looking for. Whether you're looking for warmth or fashion, flats or stilettos, ankle-high or above-the-knee, there is a stylish look out there just waiting for you to find it.

1.

Decide what boot height you want to buy. Booties rise just above the ankle and work well with tights and skirts as well as with jeans. You will be able to take booties on and off your feet much more easily than other boot styles. Mid-height boots offer a compromise between booties and knee-high boots, and you can wear them over or under your pants or with tights. Knee-high boots and above-the-knee boots make a more dramatic statement than booties or mid-height boots. Wear them over your jeans or with tights and a short skirt for a bold look.

2.

Decide what color and material you want in your boots. You can find booties, mid-height boots and knee-high boots in suede, leather, moccasin and other materials. Choose moccasin for comfort, black or brown leather or suede for maximum versatility and bright colors for bolder statements.

3.

Decide whether you want flat boots or boots with stiletto or wedge heels. If you’ll be walking long distances in your boots, choose flat or wedge heels. If you’re comfortable in heels and will be wearing your boots for formal occasions, choose stiletto heels.

4.

Consult fashion magazines or their websites for boot ideas in the specific style you’re interested in.

5.

Consult magazine reviews and customer reviews of boots you’re considering buying. Many online stores display numerous customer reviews for each product. Read a variety of reviews and look for the most consistent opinions.

6.

Compare boot prices at online stores then go to a real store to try on the boots before you buy them.
