One of the best things about fashion in this day and age is that when it comes to rules, they are meant to be broken. Yesterday's quintessential fashion don'ts have become today's fashion do's -- and the sky is the limit for developing your own personal style. So when it comes to choosing a shoe color to match a hunter green dress, you have lots of options. Fashion stylist Oak Laokwansathitaya of San Francisco shares some tips that are guaranteed to give you stunner appeal.

Go Neutral

While the cut and style of the dress have a lot to do with what color shoe you opt for, one way to dress up a hunter green dress is to pair it with a neutral tone. Tan and beige colors give the dress a chic quality that is perfect for more formal occasions. This color works for all lengths; however, it is especially great for shorter dresses as it makes legs appear endless -- and who doesn't love long legs? Pair it with gold accessories to create an understated yet elegant look.

Make it Earthy

For a more earthy and grounded look, a rust or dark brown shoe can be a subtle contrast. These colors can also have a bit of a vintage feel to them and look great when worn with vintage-inspired jewelry. Try a high-heeled ankle boot for a dash of modern vibe.

Classic Black

If you want to play it safe, black shoes are always a go-to option. The best thing about this color is that most of us already have a few pairs of black shoes stashed away in our closet. Look for a strappy heel for a more formal event or try a pair of worn-in motorcycle boots with a short hunter green dress and cropped jacket for up-to-the-minute downtown appeal.

Complementary Colors

Stand out in the crowd with a burst of color! You might think that red and green together could come across as Christmas themed, but surprisingly, bright red and hunter green can look absolutely amazing together. One reason red really pops is because it is green's complementary color, meaning that on the color wheel, these two are complete opposites. This color combination is playful yet chic.
