For practically ever, beauty companies have used chemical preservatives designed to make their products last and last and last. But researchers have found that some of these additives, such as parabens, contain potential carcinogens and can upset your delicate hormonal balance. If you're into making or buying more natural shampoos, you can look for a few natural preservatives that will make your beauty goods last with fewer possible effects on your health.

Shelf Life

The best news ever for natural-minded ladies is that some natural preservatives can make your shampoo last for a few years. The Organic Consumers Association states that some natural shampoo companies, such as Jason Natural Cosmetics, are making shampoos with naturally derived preservatives that make their products about half as long as shampoos made with chemical preservatives. In general, shampoos made with natural preservatives will last between 18 months and 3 years, while chemical preservatives can keep your shampoo sticking around for 5 to 8 years, which is really only essential if you're a beauty product hoarder.

Natural Ingredients

In place of harsh, potentially dangerous chemicals, Jason Natural Cosmetics makes its shampoos last with a preservative their mad scientists came up with by mixing salt crystals, powder from ash trees and grapefruit seed extract. Another natural beauty product company, Aubrey Organics, uses a cocktail of grapefruit seed extract combined with vitamins A, C and E to keep their shampoos naturally preserved.

Homemade Goods

If you take DIY to a whole new level and make your own shampoo, you can seek out a natural preservative so your mixtures don't grow mold or break down before you're done using them. In general, though, your homemade shampoos just won't last as long as any you find at the store. Your best bet is to make a small amount of shampoo, say 6 to 8 ounces, at a time and use it all up before it gets funky. You can try adding antiseptic essential oils, such as pine oil, rosemary oil and tea tree oil, to stop mold from growing in your shampoo. Mix a bit of jojoba oil in as well to extend the shelf life of your natural homemade shampoo.

What to Avoid

If you want to keep synthetic preservatives off of your skin and out of your body, get good at reading labels. Don't buy any shampoo that contains parabens, including methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben. Even if a product's label says that it's natural or organic, don't believe the hype. Do your own sleuthing and read the ingredients list. Many shampoos that are made with natural preservatives will proudly claim that they are paraben-free right on the label.
