Blondes might have more fun, but brassy sure ain't sassy. If that bright orange color was not intended for Halloween, step away from the panic button, because help is on the way. Just as you tone your muscles in the gym, the right shampoo tones your hair color, and revives those blond locks you know and love.
The Chemistry of Brass
Hair color deposits a red, blue and yellow rainbow into the molecules of your hair cuticle. The blue molecules are the little guys, and often fall victim to chlorine and iron deposits in your shower water, and overly ambitious towel drying. Destroying the blue leaves you with yellow and red molecules. Now think back to those color wheels you played with as a kid. Yellow combined with red equals, you guessed it, orange. Defeating the orange empire requires choosing a shade on the opposite end of the color spectrum.
Purple Power
Purple claims a proud position on the opposite side of the color spectrum from orange. Red combined with blue creates this regal color, so washing your hair with a purple shampoo puts back some of the lost blue molecules and levels the playing field. Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo contains a violet coloring agent that combats the brass, Rona O'Connor, hair-colorist for actress Blake Lively told "Allure" magazine. This conditioning shampoo has a floral scent, and produces a rich, luxurious lather.
John Frieda
John Freida's Sheer Blonde Colour Renew tone correcting shampoo impressed the beauty editor at BeautyEditor.ca. Its formula contains a UV filter that prevents your hair from sun damage, lavender and a brightener that reverses brassiness. Using a seemingly magical process, the company's special lavender technology converts UV rays to a white-blue light, which makes bleached-blond hair appear lighter and brighter.
Natural Shampoos
Brassy hair is like a rambunctious child. Sometimes, only Mother Nature has the means to tone her down. Lush Daddy-O Violet Shampoo infuses violet leaf, lemon juice, lime juice and rose and bergamot oils into a cleansing, toning, sweet-smelling shampoo. Aveda's Blue Malva Shampoo tones blond and gray hair with an infusion of coneflower and wild-crafted blue malva. The coneflower brightens your hair color, while the blue malva tones your scalp.
