Adding highlights to your hair is an easy way to give your tresses beautiful depth without making the full commitment of dyeing your hair completely. Highlights are an ideal way to experiment with color. You can apply your own highlights at home or have your hair colorist apply them. There are numerous sexy ways to apply highlights to your hair.

Ombre Highlights

This technique is a stylish and subtle way to add color to your hair. Paint on a color that is one or two shades lighter than your natural hair color. An ombre application is ideal for someone who wants a natural-looking hair hue. Apply hair at the bottom of your roots using a color brush, and go up your hair shaft, stopping several inches below your roots. The look should appear slightly messy and organic. The fantastic thing about coloring your hair in an ombre highlighted fashion is that you don't have to worry about touching up your roots!

Reverse Ombre Highlights

Reverse ombre highlights happen when you apply a color that is one or two shades lighter than your natural hair color onto your roots. The color of your hair color and the ombre color will provide you with a sultry blended sun-kissed hue. Unlike traditional ombre highlight techniques, reverse ombre highlights will require regular color touch-ups to keep your style looking best.

Multicolored Highlights

These highlights are an option if you want to experiment with your look using different colors. Usually the placement for multicolored highlights is on the crown part of one's hair, however you also can place them at the bottom of your hair as well for a color block effect. Multicolored highlights are not limited to just hair colors in the same family either, consider mixing browns and blonde shades or unnatural colors such as pink, blue or purple.

Lowlights

Don't want to give your tresses a lighter makeover? Consider having lowlights added to your hair. Lowlights are the same concept as highlights, only with darker colors. You can add lowlights all over, in certain parts of your hair and blend them with highlights if you desire. It will make your natural hair color stand out, appearing like highlights. Lowlights are a great option for someone with very light hair looking to add depth to their mane.
