If you've been invited to a semi-formal Air Force dinner, it's important that you dress appropriately. Semi-formal Air Force occasions include change of command and special honor ceremonies. While you won't have to slip into a formal ball gown, show your respect by wearing elegant and classy evening attire.
If you aren't sure what to wear to a semi-formal military dinner, you can't go wrong with a classic black cocktail dress. The frock should be knee-length or longer, and made of a luxe fabric such as satin or silk. After 6 p.m., consider wearing a long dress. Avoid wearing a dress with a revealing neckline, and stick to a frock that at least has cap sleeves. If the dress is strapless, wrap a matching shawl around your bare shoulders.
Don't worry if you're not a dress girl, as classy separates are considered appropriate semi-formal wear. If the dinner will take place before 6 p.m., you may wear a coordinating pant suit, such as linen slacks and a blazer. If the dinner is after 6 p.m., slip into a skirt suit, such as a knee-length or longer pencil skirt with a matching jacket. Wear a crisp, white button-down blouse under the jacket for an elegant appearance.
When dressing for the dinner, make sure you look appropriate from head to toe. Avoid wearing casual shoes, such as loafers (of course, flip flops or sneakers are also verboten). You can wear open- or peep-toe sandals or heels as long as they are a neutral color, such as black or gray, that coordinate with your outfit. To visually elongate your legs, slip into a pair of nude heels.
Make the semi-formal look your own with complementing accessories. An Air Force dinner isn't the time to wear bright, showy costume jewelry, but feel free to slip your favorite pair of pearl or small gemstone earrings into your ears. Enhance a shirt or dress with a strand of pearls, or wear an elegant silver or gold chain necklace with a diamond pendant. For convenience and style, carry a small, neutral-hued clutch or handbag.
