Just because it's winter doesn't mean you have to look all down in the dumps with that black coat. Sure, black coats are chic and stylish, but they can get downright boring sometimes. One way to add a bit of life to your jacket is with a scarf. Scarves keep your neck warm, but they can also increase the drama and style of your ensemble. Fortunately, finding a scarf to go with your coat is often simple and enjoyable.
Consider Budget
You can easily break the bank when finding a killer scarf with all those hot labels out there -- Hermes, anyone? However, according to New York City-based stylist and author Jene Luciani, you don't have to. "If your budget doesn't allow for Pucci, vintage stores can be great places to score quality scarves," she says. So spend the day looking for a chic scarf that won't make you late on rent. But of course, if you can afford it, go for it.
Consider Material
Material is an important aspect when it comes to choosing which scarf you're going to rock. Of course, it has to be comfortable; you can't go around scratching at your neck all day. Additionally, it has to keep you warm. Luciani suggests going for a silk or chunky knit scarf. Silk scarves are typically best for moderate temperatures, whereas knits keep you warm when the temperature is pretty chilly. Either work great and look even better.
Consider Color
Besides feeling good, the scarf has to look good, too. "I love a pop of color with a coat and a scarf is the perfect way to do that!" says Luciani. Look for bright colors, such as pink, blue, purple or teal to add a little bit of edgy zing to your look. Patterns are also helpful when you want to give some flavor to your black coat or jacket. Choose colors and patterns that speak to you and really add some warmth and style to the dark coat.
Consider Versatility
One of the characteristics that makes a scarf such a popular accessory is that you don't always have to wear it around your neck. The scarf can still enhance the black coat even when it is sitting elsewhere on you. This is particularly useful if you splurged and bought an expensive scarf, because you can use it in many ways. "If you do decide to go for an investment piece, the best part about a scarf is that it's versatile -- you can use it to liven up a black coat, tie it on a handbag, wear it as a headband or of course numerous ways around your neck," Luciani says. So get creative with that scarf and let your imagination enhance your style.
