There are two types of perms. One type makes straight hair curly, and the other type of perm -- also commonly called a relaxer -- makes curly hair straight. If your roots need a little straightening and you don't want to get a relaxer, no worries. There are other ways to straighten those stubborn roots.
Try a blowout to get curly hair straight. To pull it off, you'll need a blow dryer and a brush. Brush your hair as it's dried to get it good and straight. Just make sure you're focusing on your roots. Once you've blown your hair out, run a bit of polishing serum over it to keep it shiny and healthy.
The flat iron can be the curly haired girl's best friend. It's specifically built to make hair sleek and straight. Before using a flat iron or any other heated styling product, make sure to spritz hair with a heat protectant to minimize damage. Flat-ironed styles usually last until you wash your hair.
Brazilian Keratin Treatments
Unlike relaxers, keratin treatments aren't permanent. Keratin treatments add protein to your strands, making them much less frizzy. Try getting a keratin treatment before you get your blowout. It will help to make your blowout even more successful, and you'll be left with hair that's straight, glossy, and dries in half the time. Your roots will thank you.
Keratin treatments can be pricey, costing as much as $300. If you don't have the cash, try a similar treatment that you can buy at your local drugstore. Store-bought keratin straightening products coat your tresses with keratin just like the Brazilian treatments, making your blowout and flat-iron styles even straighter. Don't expect the results of an in-salon treatment, though. Most store-bought treatments only last a few days, while salon treatments last up to a year.
