Fashionistas tend to love all things shiny, with jewelry being especially beloved because of its ability to pump up appearance. Rings, when given for friendship, are great ways to make a statement about your relationship with someone else while also adding some fashion flair to your appearance. Wearing a friendship ring on the ring finger has specific connotations, however, which is why many people wear these types of rings on the pinky finger.
Left Versus Right
Jewelers and wearers alike traditionally see the hands as an extension of the whole body, which needs to be physically, cognitively and spiritually balanced. The right hand is normally seen as giving energy, while the left hand receives energy. This general rule flips for left-handed people. This means that if you wear a friendship ring on your left hand, it usually indicates you're emphasizing the receptive aspects of the relationship, such as listening well or taking advice. If you wear it on the right, you're emphasizing the giving aspects, such as helping out when your friend needs you or being compassionate.
Cultural Differences
Your culture can influence whether you choose to wear the ring on the left or right hand and thus can influence what the ring signifies. Some cultures, for instance, wear wedding rings on the right hand and thus wear friendship rings on the left. In the United States, the reverse is true.
Romantic Confusion
In the United States, engagement rings and wedding bands are typically worn on the left ring finger, which is associated with receiving energy. Thus, if you wear a friendship ring on that finger, you strongly imply that there are romantic undertones to the relationship. So unless you're planning to say yes to an engagement and head to the chapel, it's usually better to wear the ring on the right hand, although that changes the energy connotation.
Commitment
Depending on whether you wear a friendship ring on the left or right finger, you can send different messages about how you view the energy balance and romanticism associated with your relationship. However, no matter which hand the ring is on, a friendship ring always symbolizes your commitment and bonding to the person with the matching ring. It means you value and trust him and that you're willing to help him through rough times.
