Cold sores are a fairly common, small red blister or lesion on your lip. They are, according to MayoClinic.com, a fluid-filled lesion caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. They usually go away between 10 and 14 days. They can be painful, but unfortunately, there is no way to cure them. The scarring left behind from a cold sore may seem minor, but if you get more than one, it can start to leave a mark.

1.

Drink water. Water keeps your skin well hydrated and flushes toxins out of your body. It also helps improve your blood circulation increasing your body's ability to heal. Drink 7 or 8 glasses of water that are about 8 ounces each.

2.

Apply honey to your scar. Herbal-Home-Remedies.org recommends dabbing honey morning, afternoon and night to your cold sore scar to help reduce the appearance of scars.

3.

Use Aloe Vera gel, suggests MorphemeRemedies. The gel or juice of the aloe vera plant is very healing to skin. Either purchase a pure gel form from your local pharmacy or natural foods store or purchase a plant and break off a piece to reveal to the juice. Apply it directly and leave it on. You can use Aloe Vera while you still have the cold sore and while it won't harm you if the blister is open, it may hurt. You may want to wait until the sore has healed over.

4.

Apply tea bags soaked in warm water, recommends HomeRemedyHaven. At the first sign of a cold sore, apply tea bags -- green or black is fine -- to your sore. Not only will this help reduce the eruption, but it can aid in the healing of the sore and eventual scar reduction.

5.

Consult a physician if you are getting a lot of cold sores or if they seem to be particularly bad when they erupt. She may be able to prescribe a topical medication that cannot only reduce the pain in the sore but can help it heal properly without a lot of scarring.
