It really stinks when you find the most beautiful vintage shirt only to get it home and discover it has an unbearable musty odor. Fortunately, you can get rid of that stench with a little laundry detergent, vinegar, baking soda and water.

1.

Fill the washer or a sink with water. Use the warmest water allowed for the clothing item.

2.

Add a cap full of liquid laundry detergent, or a cup full of powder laundry detergent to the water.

3.

Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the water as well.

4.

Wash the clothing item as directed on its label, either in the washing machine or by hand in the sink.

5.

If the musty smell remains, let the clothing item soak in a bucket containing 1 gallon water, 1 cup white vinegar and 1 cup baking soda. Remove the clothing item the next day, then wash as directed on the item's label.

Tips & Tricks

You can also put the musty smelling clothing in a sealed room with an air ionizer for a couple of days. This will remove the musty smell without getting the clothing wet. However, don't put clothing that contains either rubber or elastic in a room with an air ionizer or these materials may disintegrate.
