Loving the bold lipstick colors available, but not sure if you can pull them off with your dark skin tone? Go for it. Red lipstick on black women is a chic and classic look that darker skin tones can wear with confidence. Think sexy and glamorous as you choose a red color that accentuates your lips. Rock the red and shout your style.

1.

Determine your skin tone, whether it’s light, medium or dark. Within these three categories, your skin probably has undertones that make it cool or warm. If you don’t know whether you’re cool or warm, think about how colors look on you. If pink, lavender, blue and red look good on you -- yet orange and yellow don’t -- you’re probably cool. If orange and yellow look good on you, you’re probably warm. You could also have mixed tones, which means you might have to try different colors to see how they look on you. If your skin tone is cool, cool-hued, blue-reds are likely to be the most flattering, and if you are warm-toned, go for the ones with an orangish base. And everyone can wear neutrals, so if you are looking for a safe pick, that's the one to go for.

2.

Check out light pinks, muted reds or peach colors for light skin tones. Because your skin is lighter, be careful with deep and bold colors during the day. Ramp it up with bold shades for evening.

3.

Choose darker pinks, medium reds, magenta or bronzed reds if your skin tone is medium tone. Use medium shades that are neither too light nor too bold to fit your medium skin tone.

4.

Go with the deepest pinks and reds, dark magenta and reds with chocolate undertones if you have dark-toned skin. You have skin that can handle the richest and darkest shades.

Tips & Tricks

If you’re not sure about a color, go ahead and try it. You won’t lose anything by trying, and you might just find your perfect shade of red. Try visiting a department store cosmetic counter and spending some time trying different shades. You don’t have to buy. Just check them out.
