Love squeaky clean hair, but hate to drop the cash for spendy, big brand shampoos? Or maybe your mane has a major issue with a common shampoo additive? Industrious divas who want to know what's getting dolloped on their 'dos can saunter to their kitchen and whip up their own natural homemade shampoos. Yummy ingredients such as organic oils and veggie glycerin can clean, condition and moisturize locks for a fraction of the cost of fancy, straight-off-the-shelf shampoos.
Normal Hair
1.
If your hair is normal--that is, not too dry and not too oily--this natural hair shampoo is the perfect way to cleanse and condition your locks. Combine 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup liquid castile soap with 1/2 tsp. of your choice of organic oil--such as sunflower, sesame or almond oil--into a container. Whisk to blend the ingredients well.
2.
Apply your shampoo to damp hair as you would a commercial product. Gently massage the suds into your scalp, and rinse thoroughly. Follow it up with your favorite conditioner.
3.
Keep your shampoo mixture stored in a capped bottle in a cool, dry area.
Chamomile Shampoo
1.
De-stress your tresses by cleansing them in chamomile, known for its relaxant properties. Brew 4 chamomile teabags. Steep the tea in 1 1/2 cups of boiled water until it's strong; steeping it for 10 minutes is just right. Remove the tea bags.
2.
Whisk 4 tbsp. pure soap flakes into the chamomile water until it's blended well, then let the flakes stand until they melt and soften.
3.
Stir in 1 1/2 tbsp. glycerin into the soap until it is blended. The glycerin retains moisture. Great for thirsty locks. Let the mixture cool before use.
4.
Use it as you use your normal shampoo. Rinse thoroughly, then condition as normal.
5.
Keep your shampoo mixture stored in a capped bottle in a cool, dry area.
Lemon Herb Shampoo
1.
Rich, luscious jojoba oil moisturizes any hair type, while the lemon of this concoction invigorates the scalp. All you need to do is heat up 1/2 cup distilled water on the stove, then throw in 2 tbsp. of rosemary (for dark girls) or chamomile (for blonds) until just boiling.
2.
Remove the herbs and water from heat and let them cool. Strain out any bits of herbs and toss them out.
3.
Add 1/2 cup of liquid soap or unscented shampoo to the bowl and whisk it up. Add 1 tbsp. of salt, 1/4 tsp. of lemon oil and 1 tsp. of jojoba oil to your herb water. Shake it vigorously.
4.
Apply the shampoo as you would your regular shampoo. Rinse thoroughly, then condition as normal.
5.
Keep your shampoo mixture stored in a capped bottle in a cool, dry area. Make sure you shake it before use, as the oils will separate.
