Every girl knows that cucumber works miracles on under-eye bags, but potato slices can be just as beneficial. If you used your last cucumber in yesterday's salad, try pampering your eyes with potatoes instead. Any type of spud will do -- from red to white -- so you're bound to have what you need on hand.
When To Use
If you've been up with your crying baby all night or if a sad movie had you in tears, it's time to call on the potatoes. Under-eye bags are caused by a number of factors, including lack of sleep, allergies and water retention due to noshing on too many salty foods.
Potato slices can soothe red, irritated eyes just as well as commercial products, and they are cheaper, too. Raw potatoes have a high concentration of starch, which works as an anti-inflammatory to reduce redness. If you chill the potato slices before placing them over your eyes, the coolness works to diminish any swelling or puffiness.
Not only do under-eye circles look puffy, they're typically dark as well. Potatoes are full of the enzyme catecholase, which oxidizes to a derivative of benzoquinone when exposed to air. Benzoquinone is related to hydroquinone, an ingredient found in skin-lightening products. When placed over your eyes, raw potato slices reduce the look of dark circles.
How to Apply
You can get a spa-inspired eye treatment at home in just a matter of minutes. Chill a potato in the refrigerator for at least an hour and rinse it with cool water. Cut one-quarter of the potato into two slices and spritz your eyes with water. Lie back and place the slices over your eyelids as you relax for 10 minutes.
