Peppermint -- especially peppermint oil -- is an effective way to treat and heal acne. Get the idea of candy canes out of your mind, we're talking about the actual herb here. The extract of the peppermint plant can not only treat the symptoms of acne, but will bring some much needed relief to the irritation and dryness that comes along with it.

Facial Cleansing

In a book written all about "less toxic living," Annie Berthold-Bond offers up a quick and easy recipe for a peppermint-based acne cleanser. She says peppermint is "refreshing and stimulating for the skin." The formula will help with the daily treatment of acne. All you have to do is make some hot tea with peppermint and water. Once it cools down, you strain it and add 1 teaspoon of sea salt. The mixture can be used as an all-natural cleanser that will be effective against acne.

Blackhead Treatment

One of the absolute worst symptoms of acne are pesky blackheads -- which by the way, no one will be mistaking for stylish facial moles. Not to worry. In "Aromatherapy Handbook for Beauty, Hair, and Skin Care," Erich Keller writes that peppermint oil's antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties make it a powerful blackhead treatment when applied directly to pimples.

Oil Removal

Acne sufferers often struggle with shiny, oily skin. It's embarrassing, and it's very noticeable when someone can just about see their reflection in your forehead. Peppermint oil will step in and solve that problem for you. When dabbed onto the skin, it will clear troubling oil out of your pores and even up your complexion. The great news is that it also has a very refreshing smell, so unlike other remedies, you won't have to deal with any nastiness.

Soothing Skin

An unwanted side effect of too much skin treatment is redness, dryness and irritation. If you find that on top of having pimples and blemishes you have itchy, flaky skin, you'd be happy to hear that peppermint is a powerful natural remedy. In fact, in "Naturopathy And Yoga," Parvesh Handa writes that it is "refreshing" and "cooling" to the skin and will bring relief to itchy, irritating skin. It will not only help reduce your troubles with acne, but it will prevent any irritation in the process.
