The Outfits to Wear in Paris in the Winter

Overview

Paris represents the height of fashion, and not just because of Paris Fashion Week, although that's certainly an enormous factor. Paris street fashion is bold, classic and superbly trendy. Winter gives Parisians an opportunity to experiment with layering. If you hope to fit in with the local fashionistas, you'll need a look that bridges the gap between everyday casual and extra edgy, starting with a major statement piece.

The Statement Jacket

Dress up a casual look with a statement-making jacket. This classic trick can turn jeans, a T-shirt and simple flats into a drool-worthy ensemble that's perfect for breakfast at the local patisserie. Try a leopard print jacket, cut either in a motorcycle style or a windbreaker for extra impact, and layer it over a loose white T-shirt and a pair of indigo skinny jeans. For extra warmth add a cashmere v-neck sweater under your jacket, a slouchy knit hat and a thick scarf, all in neutral colors. Complete the look with red T-strap flats so you can hang with your sightseeing tour all day without worrying about a foot ache.

Menswear Inspired

If you want a look that's less casual and more put together, go for a menswear inspired ensemble. A classic white button up is flattering on all figures and infinitely in style. Layer over your button up with an oversized gray blazer, a pair of skinny black trousers and extra high wedges. Black platform wedges will put a feminine and edgy twist on a classically androgynous look. Finish your outfit with striking red lipstick and a double breasted trench style coat, but make sure it's wool or you'll be a little cold.

Flowey and Feminine

Channel the romantic feel of the French countryside with a flowery, feminine look. Choose a loose, chiffon dress or a slouchy thick knit so the material can skin your curves without hugging them. Accessorize with nude platform pumps and a long vintage locket or a pocket watch turned necklace. To keep yourself warm, choose a classic pea coat in a light color, such as camel or salmon, and sweater tights in a deep shade — plum or forest green, for examples. Wear your hair in long, loose waves or a messy, undone side braid. And don't forget the earmuffs.

Statement Sweater and Cropped Trousers

A chunky wool sweater isn't always the first image you think of when you're imagining a chic Parisian outfit. It might conjure up images of red-nosed ski bums or the coldest days of winter, but when accessorized correctly, a wool sweater is the perfect statement piece; plus, it's super warm. Choose an oversized sweater with a large graphic image or stripes and pair it with vibrant cropped trousers. Choose the color of your trousers by the color that's the least represented on your sweater. It will brighten your look. Add heeled booties, dark socks and a black swing coat and you're ready for Fashion Week.
