One of the hottest looks in hair color over the past couple of years has been the ombre style highlights. If done wrong, they can look like you've got some seriously bad roots. But if done right, they can look incredibly cool. Getting your hair highlighted at a salon can be an expensive endeavor, so doing it at home might be the right choice for you. It's actually quite simple, even easier than doing normal highlights.
Open up your highlighting kit and read the directions -- difference kits have different processes. Mix the correct ingredients together to create the lightening paste.
Drape a towel over your shoulders so you don't get highlighting mix on your clothes. Use a comb to split your hair down the middle at the back and pull your locks around so they hang over each shoulder. This way, you'll get a better view of what you're doing.
Put on your gloves and with your hands, scoop up some of the paste from the little tub in which it was mixed. Generously apply it to your hair at the bottom few inches, applying less and less as you work up the length towards your face. This will prevent a drastic fade line to occur.
Let the solution sit in your hair for 10 to 60 minutes, again, following the directions included with your kit.
When time is up, rinse your hair under warm water until it runs cool. Shampoo, condition and style as usual.
If after you're done you want the tips to be even lighter, apply more mixture to just the bottom few inches and repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5.
