According to HairBreakage.net, testing several different home remedies for split ends indicates olive oil is the most effective in the treatment and prevention of split ends. Split ends result when the hair becomes excessively dry and brittle and strands begin to break when brushing, applying harsh chemicals or using heated styling tools. Olive oil is a common kitchen product containing natural forms of vitamin E. When used as treatment for split ends, olive oil replenishes the hair's natural oils and conditions the damaged areas to improve and prevent future breakage.
Your hair is hydrated with natural oil, known as sebum. When your hair and scalp become dry, you are lacking sebum. You can experience dryness, breakage, hair loss and inadequate hair growth when your hair isn't maintaining a normal level of oil. Split ends occur when the ends of your hair become dry and brittle, breaking off strand by strand and resulting in an uneven, rough appearance and feel. Using chemicals, like perms and relaxers, and heated styling tools, such as blow dryers and flat irons, removes your natural oils to increase dryness and split ends.
Olive Oil Benefits
Because dry hair lacks natural oils, what better way to rehydrate the hair than with an oil-based product? Olive oil adheres to your scalp, moisturizing the skin and hair shaft while increasing blood flow to produce healthy hair growth. The natural forms of vitamin E found within olive oil works similarly to a deep conditioner without any harsh additives. It coats your hair follicle and shaft to repair split ends and strengthen your beautiful locks. Olive oil can also be used as a hot oil treatment to correct damage, without the expensive price tag.
Olive oil can be used in many different ways, according to your specific personal preferences, each with similar results. To strengthen your hair against damage, stimulate hair growth, decrease hair loss and treat dandruff, massage a generous amount of room temperature olive oil into your scalp for a minimum of 3 minutes. To moisturize and repair split end damage, apply olive oil directly to wet hair, massaging it into the ends. Leave this conditioning olive oil treatment on for 3 to 5 minutes. As a hot oil treatment, coat your entire scalp and hair in a generous layer of olive oil. Wrap your hair in a heated, dry towel and leave in place until the towel is completely dry. After any of these olive oil treatments, shampoo your hair normally.
Hair that becomes too oily appears dirty and unmanageable and may provoke frequent points and whispers from those around you. Any olive oil home remedy can produce greasy hair, if used too frequently. Because your hair is constantly creating it's own natural oils, using an olive oil treatment too often can cause scalp inflammations, such as dandruff. To avoid these side effects, never use an olive oil home treatment more than once per week. If using olive oil as a hot oil treatment, use every other week for dry hair and one per month for oily to normal hair types. Frequent hot oil treatments can have adverse effects, resulting in further damage and split ends.
