If you remember the 1980s, you remember Ocean Pacific. Known for its brightly colored and surf-inspired clothing, the brand celebrated its name with a telltale "Op" logo stitched onto polo shirts, board shorts and swimsuits. Unless you're a dedicated Wal-Mart shopper, you may not know that Op is still around, pumping out affordable, sassy sportswear for the younger set. Can you say totally radical?
It's no surprise that Ocean Pacific got its start in Southern California, right on the Pacific Ocean. Back in 1972, the brand began as a clothing line designed for and inspired by So Cal surfers and their laid back, beach bum attitude. Op's style philosophy also took cues from Cali musicians, artists and athletes. Throw on any Op clothes, and you'll look right at home strolling down a sandy beach.
If you spy an Ocean Pacific item that you simply must have, chances are, it's going to be beachwear. Op sells clothing for juniors, ranging from tank tops and shorts to t-shirts and dresses. All of these brightly colored items are designed for pulling on over a bikini as you head for the sandy shores. You can even pick up a matching Op bikini to complete your California girl look.
In 2008, Ocean Pacific signed an exclusivity deal with Wal-Mart, which means you won't find the So Cal brand's duds for sale anywhere else. Wal-Mart stores in the U.S., Brazil, India and China have racks of Op beachwear for sale in the junior's department.
Op unleashed a new marketing campaign in 2010; it was designed to get youngin's who most likely missed out on the 80s talking about the iconic brand. You may have seen Ocean Pacific ads featuring young heartthrobs from TV and movies vamping in funky beachwear. Dianna Agron from "Glee" and Jessica Szohr from "Gossip Girl" have shown their beachier sides in ads for the Pacific beachwear company.
Considering Ocean Pacific clothes are exclusively available at Wal-Mart, it's no surprise that they can be had for cheap. If you're a pretty young thing looking to add some casual basics to your wardrobe or pick up some easy-to-wear clothes for a beach vacation, you can certainly do so without dropping much dough if you grab some Op duds at the super store. Ocean Pacific bikinis run about $18, which makes it a lot less depressing if you manage to lose your top in the surf.
