Have you ever put on makeup and could literally feel it breaking you out? With active ingredients to treat and prevent blemishes, the Neutrogena SkinClearing Makeup line endeavors to do the opposite. The SkinClearing line includes concealer and liquid makeup produced without pore-clogging oil to help you experience noticeably clearer skin while you cover up any skin unevenness and blemishes.

Salicylic Acid

The active ingredient in Neutrogena SkinClearing Makeup is salicylic acid. This blemish-busting ingredient is present in a 0.5 percent solution in the makeup. Salicylic acid works to reduce breakouts by penetrating your pores and breaking up oil plugs that can lead to acne blemishes as well as whiteheads and blackheads. Although it requires continuous applications to be effective, salicylic acid can help to prevent pimples too by keeping dead skin cells and extra oil from plugging up your pores. Keep in mind, however, that 0.5 percent salicylic acid is relatively small amount compared to spot treatments that can have 2 percent to 5 percent salicylic acid. If you have acne, the 0.5 percent formulation may not be enough to keep pimples at bay.

Skin Soothers

Neutrogena SkinClearing makeup includes two natural skin-soothing ingredients. This includes aloe vera leaf juice and chamomila recuita flower extract from the chamomile plant. These ingredients are designed to relieve inflammation that causes redness in your skin. If you experience problems with an uneven skin tone, pimple redness or acne scarring, these ingredients may help to make your skin color appear more even and smooth.

Retinyl Palmitate

Neutrogena’s SkinClearing concealer contains retinyl palmitate, which is a derivative of vitamin A and an acid called palmitic acid. This ingredient acts similarly to vitamin A topical ingredients like retinol to encourage skin cell turnover that keeps dead skin cells from clogging pores. Retinyl palmitate came under some controversy in 2010 when a published study linked the ingredient with causing skin cancer and tumor growth, according to The Cosmetics Cop. However, the study was highly criticized for using improper techniques. The bottom line is retinyl palmitate is considered safe to use and can make your skin look better.

Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide

Some forms of Neutrogean SkinClearing makeup contain iron oxides, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. You may know them better as physical sunblocks. These sunblocks deflect the sun’s rays, keeping them from damaging your skin. Physical sunblocks are considered especially beneficial for your skin because they don’t actually penetrate your skin -- meaning they are less likely to cause irritation and redness if your skin tends to be on the sensitive side.
