There is nothing quite like the moment you realize that the awful odor you have been smelling is coming from your shoes. It can be pretty embarrassing, but luckily, it's pretty easy to neutralize. This odor neutralization can be done in the comfort of your own home using a few common household items.
1.
Fill two old (clean) socks with cat litter and close off the openings with elastic bands. Place one litter-filled sock in each smelly shoe, and leave overnight. The litter will absorb any moisture in the shoes and help neutralize odor.
2.
Remove the litter-filled socks and discard. Sprinkle a thin, even layer of baking soda inside each shoe and leave overnight once more. Baking soda will take over where the cat litter left off and continue neutralizing the shoe odor.
3.
Shake out any excess baking soda. Spray the inside of each shoe with fabric refresher spray. Allow the shoes to dry completely before wearing them.
4.
Place a fabric softener sheet in each shoe if not wearing them immediately. Your shoes should smell fresh the next time you slip your feet inside them!
It is a good idea to invest in odor-neutralizing shoe insoles to extend the length of time your shoes remain odor-free.
Thick, synthetic socks create shoe odor quickly because they do not allow feet to breathe. Opt for thin, cotton socks instead.
Rotate your shoes often. Wearing the same pair of shoes every day will make the odor much worse.
