Brightly colored hair is not for the faint-hearted. This is particularly true of neon tresses, which make a bold fashion statement. Hailing from late 1970s punk, the bold hair statement has been the hairdo of choice for contemporary attention-provoking celebrities, including singer Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Still, there many ways to partake in this hair rebellion, from a couple of incandescent streaks in a well-coiffed mane to a full head of fluorescent hair.

Bold Bob

Update a style that dates back to the 1920s by turning up the volume of your hair color. The classic style features a blunt cut that falls to one length at the jaw line — and sometimes is accentuated with razor-sharp bangs. Add a bit of whimsy to the severe cut by dying it an electric blue or hot pink. Want a more hard-to-miss hairdo? Try dying the tips an outlandish color, such as neon green, for a two-toned effect.

Neo-Punk Emo

The "emo" is a neo-punk style that gained steamed with the music movement that happened in the 1990s. The asymmetrical shag usually has a lot of fullness in the crown with choppy pieces that taper down toward the jaw. The hairstyle is often accentuated with chunky highlights, to call more attention to the edgy cut. Place bright fuchsia or luminous turquoise underneath the crown, focusing on the hair under the bangs and around the periphery of the head. For a more attention-grabbing look, color the top of the hair a deeper hue, such as sapphire, and the highlights, aquamarine.

Highlighted Waves

For a neon-lite hairstyle try incorporating a couple of well-placed strands into long wavy hair. This hair coloring techniques works well with medium to long haircuts — especially ones that have layers to show off the flash of color. Then highlights, such as acid yellow or purple, can be placed in the bangs, helping to frame your facial features with vivid hues. Or, you can place the highlights placed behind the ears and across the back hairline for a more tone-downed hairdo.

Wigging Out

Don’t want to make a serious commitment to neon hair dye? Sport a bright colored wig to get a similar look. Wigs range from candy colored artificial pieces to previously dyed lace-front wigs in human hair. Human hair wigs are more often more of an investment, but can be trimmed, curled or flat-ironed to a style that is flattering to your face. For a one-time party look, pop on an artificial previously-styled wig. These cheaper quality wigs are available in everything from cropped bobs to flowing Lady Godiva waves.
