If you've dyed and fried your hair one too many times, it's likely a bit damaged. The chemicals in hair coloring products dry out your hair, leaving it weak and brittle. So if you're ready to make amends with your hair and get it back on track, try some natural and cheap remedies to give it that little extra TLC it so desperately craves.
Avocado Deep Conditioner
Avocados are high in oil and nutrients that aren't only good for your body, but your hair, too. Whip up a homemade conditioner to help repair your damaged, color-treated hair. Toss the pulp of an avocado into a blender. Add 1 tbsp. honey and 3 drops rosemary essential oil. Blend it for a minute or two until it turns into a smooth paste. Smother your dry strands with the mixture, pile your hair on top of your head, and wrap it up with plastic wrap. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Apply this treatment at least once a week.
Olive Oil Hair Mask
What do you get when you mix mayo, olive oil and an egg? A moisturizing hair mask, of course. Mayonnaise and olive oil both work to hydrate your hair, while the eggs contain protein that add strength. Mix together 2 tbsp. each of mayo and olive oil, as well as one egg. Apply the mixture to your dry hair. Cover your strands with plastic wrap, wait 30 minutes, then rinse it out. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
Shampoo for Damaged Hair
Shampoo is a must-have for your hair-care routine, but some store-bought products can be too harsh for your weak, damaged strands. So make your own natural shampoo instead. Mix 2 cups liquid castile soap, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup honey and 1 tsp. vitamin B liquid into an empty squirt bottle. Shake well. Use about 1 tsp. of the shampoo when you wash your hair. Your hair will be clean, moisturized and on its way to beautiful in no time.
Hot Oil Treatment
A weekly hot oil treatment works wonders at repairing damaged hair. Adding moisture to your dry locks helps to get back on track to healthy. Heat up a couple tablespoons of coconut oil and a few drops of vitamin E oil in a microwave-safe bowl just until it's warm. You might need a little more if your hair is really long or thick. Work the oil well into the scalp all the way down through the tips. Wrap your hair up in a warm towel, then put on a shower cap over the towel to trap the heat. Leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse your hair, then shampoo and condition as usual.
Tips
Aside from making your own products to repair your damaged, color-treated hair, simple changes in your hair-care routine can restore your strands, too. Avoid washing your hair daily. Instead, opt for twice weekly washings to keep your hair from drying out. Use heated styling tools infrequently and when you do, apply a heat protectant to your hair first. Don't rub your towel all over your hair to get it dry, but rather pat it dry to keep from breaking and weakening the hair. Finally, stop coloring your hair. The harsh chemicals in the dye aren't helping your mane one bit.
