Looking at the super-free, peace-and-love photographs of hippies a la 1960s Woodstock evokes a desire to let your hair blow in the wind without a care in the world. While not washing your hair for a week and touring the U.S. in a VW van is not necessarily on your to-do list, you can still channel the aesthetic that says "natural is beautiful" with some easy-to-accomplish hairstyles.
Straight and Parted
One of your visions of hippie hair might include long, straight tresses parted straight down the center of the head. This look is true hippie '70s flower power. If your hair is straight, you can achieve this look naturally by simply creating a perfect center part and adding a bit of styling cream to keep your locks soft. If you want to look like you have natural hippie hair, but you really don't, blow your hair out and then flat iron it until it's absolutely straight. Finish it off with an anti-frizz, anti-humidity product to keep it sleek.
The hippie aesthetic might pop up with certain styles in the forefront, but it was all about being totally natural, which means letting your hair do whatever it wants. If you're a curly girl, you know from years of taming and styling that your hair really just wants to be set free into super unruly curls. Create an uneven part before styling to keep a natural appearance and work some curling product in before either air or blow drying. Though you usually shouldn't touch your hair, a little frizz won't hurt, so muss it up a bit -- the last thing you want is for it to look polished.
Mini-Twists and Braids
No matter what type of hair you have, achieving a hippie vibe is super simple when you take a few moments to personalize your look. If you're dying to keep your hair off your face for the day, part your hair down the center and twist back the first couple inches, away from your face. Secure with bobby pins. For a more carefree approach, create random skinny braids of varying widths throughout your hair. Finish them off with tonal hair bands or, for an added kick, wrap the ends with thread or cloth and then tie off into a knot. Very natural chic.
When you're running out the door but want to pull of a natural, hippie-inspired look, reach for a skinny headband. Not the kind you wear to the gym, but the super-thin type you wear across your forehead and around the back of your head. Your hairstyle will come off most authentic when you create an uneven off-center part and pull your hair in front of your shoulders so it drapes prettily over your top. Add the band and you're done.
