The little black dress, or LBD, is arguably the garment that is most synonymous with fashion. The way that it expertly flatters all figures, all complexions and all ages is just one reason it's so highly praised. The key to wearing your favorite LBD well is to personalize it. One way to do that is by choosing a nail color that suits your mood and personality, but also complements your dress.
OK, ladies, the color combo of black and red is a no-brainer, so it should come as no surprise that one of the best colors to accent your black dress and pearls is a stunning shade of crimson. While there are dozens of red shades to choose from, none make quite as much of an impression as a fiery cherry red. The contrast of red polish against a black dress is one reason it works so well, but it also easily livens up your black frock by keeping it from appearing too severe.
The ultimate color contrast, black and white, will always look stunning when paired. When wearing your black dress and pearls -- already a fierce black-and-white combo -- the addition of stark white polish is a welcome touch. To get the full effect of the complementary contrast, you need an opaque shade of white because it is thicker and shows up better against your skin. Quick tip: White polish easily turns yellow. To avoid this, apply base and top coats, and don't apply too many coats.
Adding a little shimmer to your black dress and pearls combo is never a bad idea. Black is such a severe color, a nail color with sparkle can add a little whimsy. Some silvers have more gray in them and some have more glitter; you want those that sparkle when they catch the light. Quick tip: Avoid incorporating any gold jewelry into your outfit because the mixing of metallics can be distracting.
When in doubt, go for black on black. That's right, you can never go wrong with matching your nail color to your dress. It also doesn't hurt that black nails are one of the hottest nail colors of the moment. However, there is a fine line between chic black nails and an over-the-top costumey look. To best wear black polish, keep your nails short with a square, "squoval" or oval shape.
