When you get a spiral perm, a mousse product can help you keep your ringlets frizz-free and bouncy. There are a lot of crunch-creating foams on the market so you may get the creeps when you hear the word “mousse” if you’ve tried one of those. Rest assured, there’s plenty of touchable options out there. Rather than take your chances with the masses, opt for a hair-pro favorite.

Aveda

Hairstylist Jennifer Covington-Bowers of the Scott J salon in New York recommends Phomollient from Aveda. Her top-rated styling foam is made with marshmallow root and organic honey so it’s nourishing and smells delicious, too. “Using it adds volume to thin hair and can enhance spiral perms,” she says. For best results, dispense two to four pumps into the palms of your hands and work it through your damp hair from the roots to the ends. When you want to keep your curls intact, use a diffuser or blow your hair straight with the mousse for a smooth, sleek ‘do with weightless volume.

Miss Jessie’s

Another Covington-Bowers favorite for the corkscrew curls of her Manhattan clients is Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding. The fluffy product gives hydration to curls and waves and even kinks. According to Covington-Bowers, “‘Other’ has been classified as the fastest growing racial segment of the population. This product addresses those hair issues and can be used by everyone.” Just work a nickel size dab through your hair with a large-tooth comb to define your curls or waves and let it dry naturally.

Redken

When Boston hairstylist Kelly Rich wants a mousse that tames and treats spiral permed hair, she says Redken’s Fresh Curls Curl Boost is tops. It doesn’t just smell great, it’s super effective, too. “This mousse works good for those who already have curl in their hair, to enhance it and keep the humidity from creeping in,” she says.

Rene Furterer

Betsy Briggs Cathcart of Nashville’s Studio BBC Salon says for flawless spirals she can’t get enough of Rene Furterer Acanthe’s Leave In Fluid. “It took the company five years to produce this product and it was worth the wait -- it goes on smooth and it doesn't hold the curl down or look crunchy or oily,” she says. The product controls fly-aways and Cathcart says that the smell is simply amazing.
