Put down that mascara wand -- when you want thicker and longer eyelashes, you’ll need more than one tool to make it happen. Making eyelashes look thicker with eyeliner is a trick of the trade that can help create the illusion of rich and thick eyelashes surrounding your gorgeous eyes.
Liquid Eyeliner
Master your fear of liquid eyeliner. Celebrity makeup artist and “Essence” magazine contributor Nalo Jones insists that liquid eyeliner is easier to apply than eyeliner brushes and makes a steadier line than pencils. When you’re going for fattened-up eyelashes, liquid eyeliner is the key to making a bold and thick line that gives the illusion of plumpness.
Matching Colors
Bright eyeliner colors are fun and funky, but to make this effect work right, you need to match your eyeliner and mascara precisely. This makes the line you apply along your eyelids blend seamlessly into your thick and plump eyelashes.
Apply the Eyeliner
Use a combination of pencil and liquid eyeliners for the fiercest lining effect. Start with the pencil, nestling the tip gently in between each upper eyelash to add color to the edge of your upper eyelid. If you’re afraid you’ll mess up the liquid eyeliner, go ahead and trace the line you’ll draw with the liquid using the pencil first. Make the line as close to the lashes as possible. Switch to the liquid eyeliner and swipe on a smooth and thick line of eyeliner to your upper eyelids. Make the line thicker over the outer half of each eye. If you must line the lower lashes, use the pencil and apply the liner to your inner rims only or you risk making your eyes look smaller.
Apply the Mascara
Grab the mascara wand and place the wand snug against the base of your upper lashes. Wiggle the wand back and forth a smidgen and pull it out to the tips of the lashes. Keep going to apply a thick layer of mascara over both the upper and lower lashes. Let the first coat of mascara dry for about two minutes and then apply another coat to finish the thickening effect.
