Makeup Tips for Wearing a Gray Shirt

Opt for subtle makeup with your gray shirt, like the look actress Parker Posey wore in New York City.

A couple things happen when you pull on a gray shirt. First, you make wearing makeup simple -- your neutral-hued top won't compete with the colors you choose, so you're a free agent when it comes to your color palette. However, gray can also tend to wash out any complexion, so bringing a healthy dose of color into your face is essential to looking fab. The number one tip? Gravitate toward colors that work for your skin tone and you'll look beautiful every time.

Deep Complexion

If you have a deep complexion, a gray shirt provides a beautiful contrast next to your dark skin tone. However, the super-neutral quality can wash out your face. Pep up your complexion by sweeping a charcoal shadow across your lids. Next, create a thick black line with eyeliner, dragging it out just past the outer corners of your eyes for a modified cat-eye effect. Apply two coats of black mascara to your top lashes. Sweep coral blush across your cheeks -- women with cool skin tones should opt for a pink-coral while women with warm skin tones should go with an orange-coral. Add nude lip gloss and you're done.

Tan Complexion

For your tan complexion, bring a bit of life back into your skin with strong neutral tones to liven up your face next to a gray shirt. Go with a shimmery brown eye shadow on your upper lids and the outer half of your lower lids. Finish your eyes with two coats of black mascara on your top and bottom lashes. Blend an earthy-tone blush on the apples of your cheeks -- go for terracotta on warm skin tones or dusty rose on cool skin tones. Apply a lipstick with a hint of shimmer in a hue a couple of shades darker than your blush. Beautiful.

Light Complexion

When you're a woman with a light complexion, you can illuminate your face with just a hint of color when wearing a gray shirt. Though you may feel tempted to go makeup-free for that all-natural, mussed-up appearance, it only takes a bit of color to enhance what you've got. Apply a shimmery taupe shadow to your top and bottom lids and apply one coat of black mascara to both top and bottom lashes. Go for a peachy-pink, luminescent blush on your cheeks for a dewy glow -- look for a shade with more peach if you have warm undertones or more pink if you have cool undertones. Swipe on clear lip gloss and you're done.

Fair Complexion

Fair girls, a gray shirt can leave your skin looking a bit lacking in color. Play up one of your features with a bold color and play down the rest. If you want to play up your eyes, go for metallic eyeliner -- cool girls choose blue or purple; warm girls go with green or gold. Opt for pearlescent lip gloss on your lips. If you'd rather play up your lips, go for red lipstick -- cool girls, go with a pinkish-red; warm girls, opt for a classic orange-red. Skip the eyeliner for balance. Add a coat of soft black mascara to your top and bottom lashes for either look. Sweep a light touch of sheer hot pink blush over your cheeks -- this color looks beautiful on all skin tones and the sheer formula creates a soft, flushed effect.
