The right products are key for ruddy, oily skin.

If you have an oily complexion with a naturally ruddy tone, you may struggle with getting a makeup application that looks natural, smooth and clear. Fortunately, that doesn’t need to be the case. The right products for this type of skin will dry up the oil, smooth out red areas and set perfectly for a long-lasting, flawlessly smooth face.

Primer

Primer is the key to getting a flawless look for any skin type. On oily skin, the primer will help make slick spots more matte, and prevent the rest of your makeup from seeping into your pores. It also creates a smooth, even canvas for the rest of the makeup application. Apply a layer of primer to your entire face before you apply your foundation.

Foundation

You may be tempted to cake on a heavy liquid foundation to conceal ruddiness, but the best choice for your skin type is actually a mineral foundation. This creamy powder product brushes on and quickly evens out your skin tone. Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and apply on any areas where you notice ruddiness. Don’t apply foundation to your entire face unless you need to. Red areas are often limited to the nose and cheeks, so you can leave your forehead and chin bare if this applies to you.

Concealer

Concealer is useful for spot-treating problems such as pimples, but it shouldn’t be used as a cure-all for ruddy cheeks. Concealer is lighter than your natural skin tone, so if you use it to cover large areas, you’ll only end up looking creepily pale in all the wrong spots. Save the concealer for under-eye circles and screaming pimples only.

Powder

After you’ve evened out your skin tone and created a flawless face, your final step is to set the entire look with a dusting of powder. Use a powder with a slightly yellow tint rather than pink. The yellow will balance out any remaining redness in your skin tone. Use a fat brush with dense bristles to brush the powder onto your face in small circular motions. This will keep your gorgeous makeup in place all day.
