That fancy orange dress just called out to you during your last shopping trip. You couldn't resist, but now you have a dilemma. Orange is so bold -- it's tempting to go bold with your makeup to match the look of the dress, but you could end up looking like Ronald McDonald. Fortunately, your makeup can complement your dress if you choose the right colors and shades. Delicate, muted makeup is often best for such a bright color.

Spread a thin layer of foundation over your face, matching the color of your skin as closely as possible. The orange dress will reflect back onto your face and illuminate a mismatched skin color. Dust off your face with translucent powder to set the foundation and keep it from melting off as you dance the night away.

Rub in some blush on your cheeks. Choose a delicate, sheer color that closely matches your natural skin tone. Harsh blush will make you look unnatural when coupled with the orange dress. Peach and coral blush work best to match the orange in your wardrobe.

Apply eye shadow to your eyelids, using an eye shadow brush. Go with muted navy blue eye shadow; blue is orange's complementary color. It will go well with the dress without looking like you're too matchy matchy. If you're deft at applying smoky eye shadow, work a dark navy blue color into your crease, while keeping a neutral light beige on the rest of your lid. Use a lighter navy blue for day looks and darker navy blue for night.

Line your eyes with a pencil or gel eyeliner. Liquid eyeliner will look too harsh with the orange dress. Choose soft black or dark blue liner and line only your top lid. For best results, smudge the liner with a smudger or cotton swab to soften up the line.

Sweep black mascara over your top and bottom lashes. Although you may feel tempted to use a blue mascara, too much blue will make your makeup stand out in a bad way. Instead, keep your lashes black. Brown mascara also works well with an orange dress.

Apply sheer peach or coral lip gloss to your lips. Since your dress is bright and your eyes are dramatic, you'll want a simple lip color that doesn't stand out. Ultra-shimmery lip gloss works well for a night on the town; for daytime, go for a neutral gloss with a slight shine.
