If you spend more than a few seconds on your makeup in the morning, then you know how much a blotchy face of makeup can ruin your day. Fortunately for foundation-lovers, there are steps you can take to rectify a blotchy face so that your skin stays smooth and flawless all day. Say "bye-bye" to the blotch!

Exfoliate

Unless you've got severely dry or flaky skin, your mug can probably benefit from a good exfoliation to remove dead skin to prep it for later. Choose a thick exfoliate and massage it into your face in circular motions to loosen and remove old skin that can cause blotchiness. If you have sensitive skin, go for a creamy exfoliate rather than one packed with rough particles. Or, simply washing your face with a gentle cleanser and a washcloth can get rid of rough skin.

Moisturize

After you've gotten your skin clean, you'll need to moisturize it to keep it smooth and hydrated and prevent your foundation from looking blotchy later. Grab a moisturizer that matches your skin type -- oily, dry or combo -- for the best results. Also, you'll want to apply the moisturizer after you wash your face and it's still damp to retain as much moisture as possible. Pat your moisturizer into your face.

Prime

Nothing will help your foundation to stay in place and look amazing like a good facial primer, which is formulated to keep your foundation on perfectly. Choose a primer made for your skin type and massage a dollop into your face all over. Your skin should have a more even look to it, as the primer will help to fill in lines and other facial features that can cause your foundation to look blotchy.

Apply

Apply your foundation in thin layers, not one thick layer, since this can cause your makeup to look caked on. You'll also find that it will look greasy and blotchy if you apply thick layers. Use a foundation brush, swipe the product across your face in a T-shape and blend it outwards from there. If you need more coverage, apply another layer in the same way, though you should try to stick to one or one and a half layers for a natural look that won't crease or look blotchy later.
