How to Make Your Own Shampoo for Dreadlocks

Wash your dreadlocks once a week and use a shower cap to protect them the rest of the time.

When it comes to taking care of dreadlocks, normal hair care rules fly out the window. You don't want to wash your dreads with regular shampoo because the chemicals and conditioners in most shampoo products will soften dreads and even cause them to unravel. There are many stores or websites that sell residue-free shampoo meant for dreadlocks, but you can also make your own at home for less money.

1.

Mix 1 tbsp. baking soda with 1 cup warm water in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix.

2.

Spray some of the baking soda mixture on your scalp and then use your fingers to massage it in well. This will also get your hair follicles to release natural oils, which are good for your scalp and your dreads.

3.

Rinse well with warm water. Don't worry about applying the baking soda shampoo to your dreads, since they'll get clean as the mixture rinses down.

4.

Mix 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar with 1 cup warm water in a new spray bottle and shake well to mix.

5.

Spray the apple cider vinegar onto your scalp and rinse with cold water. The apple cider vinegar rinse can be used every 2 to 3 times you wash, not every time.
