How to Make a Hair Bun Cover

Keep your bun in place and in style with your own hair bun covers.

When you don't have time to style your hair, or you need it to be out of your face, a bun can be your favorite go-to hairstyle. The bun looks equally cool on ballerinas and basketball stars, serving the purpose of keeping your hair neat and tidy while still looking stylish. If you want to perk up your bun, add a hair bun cover; make your own from any of a variety of colorful fabrics and you can rock the bun hairstyle any time of day.

1.

Put your hair into a bun the way you would normally wear it. Get out several plastic round lids from storage containers so you can do some easy DIY measurements. Hold each plastic lid up to the back of your head and see which one comes closest to being about 3 to 4 inches larger in circumference, or distance around, than your bun.

2.

Get out some lacy fabric; tulle, the kind of fabric you'd use for a tutu, works great for this, as does regular lace or even mesh. Draw a circle on the fabric, using your plastic lid as a guide. Use a fabric marker or pencil that's easy to erase, so you won't have sketch lines all over your hairdo when you finish this project. Just feel your way to figure it out, or else practice the old look-at-the-back-of-your-head-using-two-mirrors trick.

3.

Cut out the fabric around the line you drew. Erase or wash out that fabric marker now that your fabric is ready, then use clear nail polish or fray-check to seal the edges. Just paint all around the edges of the fabric and let it dry, so it won't come unraveled on you while you're wearing it.

4.

Cut a length of 1/8-inch wide ribbon three times longer than the circumference of your circle. To measure it, just loosely wrap the ribbon around the circle three times, then cut. Fray-check the edges of the ribbon, too.

5.

Starting at the top of your circle (wherever you decide the top should be), thread your ribbon onto an embroidery needle and weave the ribbon in and out of the lace fabric. When you weave, the ribbon should go around the perimeter of the circle, one inch in from the outside edge. Stop weaving when you come back to the top again.

6.

Wrap the bun cover around your bun so that the ends of the ribbon are on top. Pull on the ribbon like a drawstring to cinch the bun cover around your bun, then tie it in a bow to secure it. Now you're good to go, whether you're facing a night on the town or a night on the stage.
