Does a Long-Sleeved Casual Dress Look Good With Boots?

Long-sleeved dresses with boots keep you warm while showing off a little leg.

Wondering if you can pair that jersey wrap dress with cowboy boots for a night on the town? The answer is yes. The challenge with a long-sleeved dress is to avoid looking "covered up" head to toe by adding thick boots into the mix, so try to show off a little leg. Bottom line, though -- if you like the look and think you rock, that's all that matters.

Minidress

Pretty much any height of boot works with a super-short dress, except possibly over-the-knee boots; unless you have a few solid inches of leg between the top of the boot and the bottom of the dress, they won't look right proportionally. Contrast the covered-up look of the long sleeves on top by showing off your legs (tights optional) and wearing short ankle boots.

Knee-Length Dress

With a knee-length dress, you can pull off a streamlined look with knee-height boots, or go calf-height and show off just a little leg. Be careful with ankle boots; they can cut off the line of your leg and make your gams look shorter, especially if the only part of your leg showing is the bottom half. To solve this issue, wear ankle boots that match your skin color or, if you're wearing them, your tights.

Maxidress

If you go for boots with a maxidress, keep the boots tall; ankle boots can create that awkward leg line if the hem of your dress falls above the ankle. An inch or two of heel will keep your dress off the floor and help prevent you from tripping on it. Maxidresses, especially long-sleeved ones, keep you warm while still feeling dressed up in the winter. They're more in than ever, so if you haven't tried one before, now is the time to give it a shot.

Tights

Tights can really pull a look together. If your dress is printed or multicolored, wear tights that match a color in the dress; if it's solid and the dress matches your boots, wear tights in an accent color that you can also work into your accessories. Or pair a neutral-colored dress with boots and tights that are the same funky color; matching your shoes to your tights elongates the legs and turns the old bright-dress-with-black-tights look on its head.
