Some girls feel that getting ready to go out is sometimes better than the night itself. If this is because your picture-perfect look is not flawless for long, you no longer have to worry about rushing off to the ladies room for checkups. Celebrity makeup artist Lauren Lazaro and salon owner Cici Cotton talk about their secrets to keeping lip colors as vivid and fresh as when first applied.
Exfoliating your lips is crucial for locking in lip color. After washing your face, hold a warm towel to your lip to "soften it," says Cotton. Then take a gentle children's toothbrush and "gently rub back and forth, allowing the dead skin to be sloughed off." An alternative product Cotton recommends for lip exfoliating is Philosophy's Kiss Me Exfoliating Lip Scrub, which contains peppermint oil and helps smooth out dry, flaky lips. Lazaro recommends Softlips Lip Polish, a "pure and gentle scrub that will eliminate any dry skin." Softlips contains sugar crystals and natural oils to exfoliate and soften chapped lips.
Even smooth lips can always use a little extra touch of moisture. Dryness can cause lip color to slip into the tiny crevices of your lips and result in uneven application. Cotton's favorite hydrating product is MAC's Lip Conditioner with SPF 15. This lip conditioner brightens your pucker with a natural shine. Dab on a little bit of this good stuff and even the heaviest lipsticks won't dry out your pout with the help of almond oil, avocado extract, shea butter and wheat germ oil.
Lip primers are to be applied right before you apply the lip color you want. Cotton recommends you use a lip liner close to your lip color and then apply MAC Prep + Prime Lip, a color-free base, calling the combination of liner and primer "a brick wall protecting your lip color from being altered." Prep + Prime is meant to be applied "slightly outside the natural lip area to work as a barrier once the lipstick goes on" and works to redefine the lips. Lazaro recommends Eve Pearl Foundation, which also works as a primer to "keep the gloss in place and last longer." A plus of using Eve Pearl is that you get two uses out of this makeup foundation.
You can think of lip gloss as the "zipper on a zip-locked bag sealing in all the juicy flavors," says Cotton. The right lip gloss is one without oil because oil will "repel the lip color" and cause your color to rub off easily on drinking glasses or worse -- onto a date. Her gloss recommendation is MAC's new Tour de Fabulous Lipglasses and NARS Lip Gloss. MAC's Tour de Fabulous Lipglasses come in 11 colors such as Rich Bounty and Real Posh with matching lip liners. NARS offers a greater variety of colors such as Bad Education, Striptease, Strawberry Fields and Sunset Strip.
