Lingerie can make a woman feel sexy, confident and empowered. On the other hand, wearing pieces that do not flatter our body types can have the opposite effect. Margaret Shrum, who's fit and styled numerous celebrities such as Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Betsey Johnson, Mariah Carey, Kate Moss and Bette Midler, makes it her mission to help women enjoy their shape, size and age through "sensual styling." "Lingerie is an essential part of our wardrobe," Shrum said. "Taking time to review, replace and develop a lingerie wardrobe can enhance your figure, simplify getting dressed each morning and enable you to look your best."
Pear-shaped body types are ultra-feminine, and usually have narrow shoulders, a smaller chest and ribcage, a longer torso with a flat tummy and a tiny waistline. They are fuller in the bottom half with curvy hips, thighs and round derrieres. To add inches to your tiny top, Shrum suggests wearing either demi-cup bras with details like ruffles and bows or triangle-shaped bras that balance out and add more dimension. For the bottom half, go with boy shorts or high-waist briefs that disguise full hips. Your sexy sleepwear should consist of A-line chemises (short nightgowns, usually with spaghetti straps) that hit above the knee.
If you have broad shoulders, a full bust and a small-to-average waist with narrow hips, you, my dear, are an inverted triangle. You'll want to accentuate your curves and receive support. "Full-cup bras will give proper support, and a balconette bra will create a beautiful, feminine bustline," Shrum said. Bring attention to your lower half with low-rise panties in lace and silk, adorned with fun details like bows or side ties. Show off your best features with babydoll nighties or silk men's style button-up nightshirts.
If you boast an hourglass figure, you have been blessed. The epitome of the female body, your upper bust and lower hips are in proportion and your waist is generally 10 inches slimmer. "You have a medium-to-full bust, a defined waist and curvy hips and bottom," Shrum said. "Bodysuits, pin-up (styles inspired by the glamorous 1940s that usually consist of high-waist panties and balconette bras), thongs, corsets ... you can wear almost anything, so select beautiful sets that you love."
Usually having an average-to-small bust, flat fanny and thin legs, ladies with svelte figures have the luxury of amping up the assets of their choosing. Wearing padded, contour and push-up bras will up the bust, ruched briefs and ruffled panties add junk in the trunk, and the elastic waistline in rompers will shape the waist. Shrum also suggests drawing attention to your back, a sensual area that's often overlooked, with backless nightgowns and loungewear.
