You've heard that catchy song about the "lime in the coconut" before. It probably puts a spring in your step and makes you think fondly of your next spring break. But did you know it should also be making you think fondly of long, straight, naturally relaxed locks? Well, it should. A lime and coconut relaxer for hair is a great way to get temporarily relaxed tresses without stressing your hair with harsh chemicals. In fact, not only does this relaxer work great on its own, but it also improves ease of styling. In no time you'll be humming that catchy tune before every night out.
Ingredients and Equipment
Before you are done getting everything together, you may feel like you are getting ready to have a party instead of relax your hair. For the lime and coconut relaxer, you will need 1 cup coconut milk and 1/2 cup fresh lime juice. You will also need a whisk, a bowl and an airtight refrigerator container.
Mixing Up the Magic
Combine the lime juice and coconut milk in the bowl. Whisk them together until they are thoroughly blended. Pour the mixture from the bowl into the airtight refrigerator container, and then refrigerate the relaxer until it takes on a creamy consistency.
Work the lime and coconut relaxer through your hair from roots to tips. When your hair is saturated, you can wrap it in a hot towel or cover it in saran wrap or a plastic cap. Let the treatment sit for at least an hour before rinsing out the treatment with cool water. You can then cleanse and style as usual for shiny, luxurious, relaxed hair.
Safety Tips and Skin Testing
Before using the lime and coconut relaxer on your entire head of hair, test it on your skin and on a lock of hair. Smear a small amount of the mixture on the inside of your wrist or elbow. Wait 20 minutes, watching the area of application for redness, itching or swelling. If none occurs, you can apply the mixture to your hair. While you are waiting on your skin test, place a lock of hair in a bowl and apply the mixture to that test lock. Rinse the mixture out after 20 minutes and examine the results to make sure that any coloring or other treatments that you already have in place will not be negatively affected by the lime and coconut treatment. This treatment is generally safe for color-treated hair. Keep the lime and coconut relaxer out of your eyes and other orifices.
