Women with inverted triangle bodies have broad shoulders and a larger bust, and then narrow at waistline and hips. Also known as a V-shape, this body type can look unbalanced if you do not create the illusion of width on your lower body. Wearing light colors projects the illusion of fullness, so use them on your bottom half to help you approximate an hourglass figure.
Add some volume to slender hips by donning a tulip skirt in a light shade or a bubble dress with a lighter shade on the bottom half. A bold floral, geometric or abstract print with a light background also does the trick. Stick to a dark, solid color or small, subtle print on top to minimize broad shoulders.
Use horizontal stripes on pants, shorts or skirts to balance your inverted triangle. You can go monochromatic with barely discernible stripes in light, faded hues, or pick a bright stripe against a white or cream background. A thin navy blue stripe on a jaunty white cotton or linen skirt has nautical flair, while basic black and white smacks of retro Parisian cool. Avoid wide horizontal prints on your top half, or stick to dark monochromatic combinations.
Women with V body types need not stick to basic black tops. The key is contrast, so pair a silky raisin-colored tank with wide straps with a brilliant printed A-line skirt. Even color-blocking with your top can create the illusion of an hourglass figure. Try a shirt that has darker colors at the shoulders and bust line, but lighter and brighter hues below the bust. Add light-colored or white pants or a skirt to complete the look.
Accessories can perform some of the work in balancing your inverted triangle figure. If you want to wear a dark dress, add a low-slung, wide white or metallic belt to give your midsection some definition and flounce. Make your hip-hugging jeans look even hipper by threading a light-colored bandana through the belt loops. Lighten up and liven up basic black leggings by tying a pale scarf or sarong around your hips.
