Light therapy doesn’t mean holding a flashlight against your skin and hoping it makes it look healthier. Light therapy -- particularly red light emitting diodes (LED) therapy -- is aimed at providing a special, high-frequency wavelength of light to tame your problem areas. With enough applications, red light therapy has been shown to reduce skin wrinkling and help a number of other skin problems.
Light Therapy Significance
Unlike some laser light therapies, LED light therapy isn’t a painful procedure. Instead, it’s meant to expose your skin to high-frequency light waves to stimulate your skin. Light therapy isn’t a new technique -- even babies are placed under lights when they have jaundice to reduce skin yellowness. Red light therapy was first used to treat cell injuries on astronauts after being in space. Now you and astronauts can have something in common when you undergo laser light therapy treatments.
How It’s Applied
Dermatologists and spas alike may offer LED red light therapy. When you undergo the therapy, an aesthetician will cleanse your skin to allow the light to penetrate more thoroughly. Your aesthetician will cover your eyes so they won’t be exposed to the light. Then, using a red light wand, your aesthetician will wave the wand over your skin for about a 30-minute treatment at a time. Talk to your dermatologist about how frequently you should undergo the treatments. Typically, this will be about seven to 10 days for a period of six weeks before you may experience wrinkle-reducing results.
When applied to the skin, the light energy penetrates your skin cells and stimulates the growth of new skin cells in your body. Since one of the main causes of wrinkles is lack of skin cell turnover, encouraging skin cell growth can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The red light wavelength specifically stimulates collagen and fibroblast production in your skin. These fibers are responsible for giving your skin stretch -- without these fibers, you get wrinkles.
Other Skin Benefits
In addition to reducing your fine lines, LED right light therapy also can help to reduce rosacea, a skin redness condition that causes skin sensitivity. They also can help to reduce areas of hyperpigmentation, which are brown spots from aging, scarring or the sun.
