So when you think of laundry, you might conjure up visions of that pile of whites, darks and colors crowding your closet, just begging to be washed. But when you think of Laundry by Shelli Segal, you probably get a different image: one of sexy sophistication, what you'll wear on your next date or to your friend's wedding. If you do wear the label, you will be in good company -- fashionistas like Beyonce, Blake Lively and Eva Longoria have all been spotted wearing Laundry by Shelli Segal.
Who Is Shelli Segal?
If you don't know the designer behind the label, you're probably not alone. Although Segal loves fashion, she doesn't love press. The sister of actor and director Robby Benson -- of "Ice Castles" fame -- Segal grew up without sharing the love of the spotlight. Her passion was for clothing, and she attended New York City's Mayer School of Fashion Design. After attending a nine-month fashion course, she made her move to sportswear, including swimsuit line La Blanca. Although the Laundry brand started in 1988, Segal didn't take over until 1992, growing the label's line to contemporary dresses, sportswear, knitwear and more. In 1997, Liz Claiborne bought the label, but Segal has stayed on as designer, creating dresses with slim silhouettes and flattering details.
Laundry by Shelli Segal is based in Los Angeles -- and the California inspirations for the line are seen in the lightweight fabrics, beach-inspired blues and long, gauzy dresses perfect for a sunset party in the Hollywood hills. You'll find '70s-inspired shift dresses in a pink bubble print or navy with knitwear appliqué. Linen dresses with colorful, swirling embroidered flowers. Although Segal designs with a lot of florals, you won't look like a housewife. Instead, the spaghetti straps and slim silhouettes add touches that make florals modern and elegant.
Your Big Night Out
While the Laundry label may have some casual options, you can hang your Laundry evening gown right next to them. Evening dressing options include a one-shoulder column gown with beaded details. A strapless silk charmeuse gown is Grecian-inspired, but pops with its lilac color. If you need a black dress for your black-tie gala, the Laundry label has that too: A shirred black jersey gown with cap sleeves is ideal for your next sophisticated bash.
A Pregnancy Partnership
When you're expecting, you can still rock Shelli Segal. That's because the Laundry label partnered with pregnancy clothing store A Pea in the Pod. With the maternity line, you can find a one-shouldered black matte jersey evening dress or a cowl-neck belted jersey dress. The maternity label also features prints -- from leopard to black-and-white jersey prints.
