Corduroys are about as synonymous with cold weather as a hot cup of cocoa is. And though the heavyweight pants had a frumpy image, these days there are sleeker more fashionable options for a girl to choose, thanks to the likes of Ralph Lauren and Anna Sui. Cords come in bright colors and stylish silhouettes, perfect for those who dare to shelve their designer jeans and casual khakis until spring.

Parisian Stripes

One of the coolest Parisian ensembles features a striped boatneck top similar to the ones sported by mimes -- but more fashionable, of course. White and black horizontal stripes can be the perfect complement to a pair of red slim-fit corduroy pants. Pair the ensemble with a floral foulard, or French scarf, tied in a loose bow at the side of the neck for that certain "je ne sais quoi." Then, further upgrade the outfit with a pair of caramel-color wedge-heel shoes.

Fall Tweeds

For a look that has a bit more prep to it, opt for matching cords with tweeds -- a perfect autumnal combination. Grab a pair of straight-leg corduroy slacks in an unobtrusive camel color, and pair them with a speckled brown tweed blazer. A jacket that features suede patches on the elbows can be a nice touch. Underneath the jacket, slide on a crisp white button-up and a tartan-inspired waistcoat in a green-and-blue plaid. Polish off the collegiate-chic look with a pair of orange low-heel laceups for a pop of color.

Military Salute

Want to go for a more menswear-inspired look? Take a garment from naval attire, such as the quintessentially chic pea coat, and make it your own. Select a coat with a lean cut that falls around mid-hip level. A pair of sapphire blue wide-leg corduroys can be just the ticket for this outfit, especially when matched with a white turtleneck sweater. Then add a bit of glitz to the look with a couple of gold necklaces, and spice things up with red platform booties for an outfit that is downright patriotic.

Gypsie Girl

It shouldn’t come as a shock that cords go great with gypsy-inspired apparel. Grabbing inspiration from the ethnic inhabitants of Eastern Europe, match a pair of chocolate-color baggy corduroy pants with a printed peasant blouse; a floral pattern in lightweight chiffon can add polish to the look. Then add a pair of furry high-heel boots. Sling a thick metal-studded leather belt around your hips, add couple of beaded necklaces, and this boho-chic outfit is good to go.
