A vest is more versatile than you think. Sure, it's got some androgynous attitude to it, but that doesn't mean it can't be part of an ultra feminine outfit. Depending on the shirt you wear under your vest, you can put together a look for just about every sartorial whim that strikes your fancy.
So many kinds of vests, so little time. From sequined and zippered to those with utilitarian pockets and far-out colors, you can take your pick. And a fine pick it will be as long as you keep the shirt and the rest of the outfit simple with clean lines. You can never go wrong with a classic white T-shirt or tank underneath your vest. A V-neck variety is the best option; it's feminine and showcases whatever necklace you choose for your outfit.
Out on the Town
A simple fitted button-up vest in black can go just about anywhere that your favorite little black dress can. Sport a dressed-up vest with a pair of skinny jeans and heels. What to wear underneath? A silk or chiffon button-up with the top buttons undone, of course. Choose a sexy color like black, deep purple or emerald green. In cooler months, trade out your black cotton vest for one in velvet.
Don't underestimate the appeal of the full suit look; it's definitely not just for the boys. Wear a crisp, white button-up shirt under your vest. Don't forget to get that collar starched. Tuck the shirt into a pair of fitted trousers, slip into a pair of heels and throw a suit jacket on top. Head into your boardroom meeting and play ball with the shrewdest characters in the room.
Who says you have to wear a shirt? It all depends on the fit of your vest. Sure, there are tiny little cropped vests with deep, cleavage-revealing V's. But there are also those that will give you full coverage. Wear it snug, and it's virtually the same look as a tank top, but with a lot more panache. A simple necklace to draw the eye upward and you're all set. Wear just your vest with a pencil skirt, a pair of skinny jeans or over your favorite dress.
