How to Keep Your Hair Shiny & Strong

It may not sound fun, but showing in ice-cold water will keep your locks shiny.

Healthy hair is oh-so-sexy and naturally shiny and strong. Baby your tresses with products recommended for your hair type to keep your strands healthy and the envy of all your pals. For the shiniest hair in town, rinse out your shampoo or final conditioner with the coldest water you can stand, advises New York City top hair stylist Vincent Roppatte. That's a secret tidbit that works for everyone, regardless of hair type.

Dry Hair

1.

Wash your hair a maximum of three times a week with a hydrating shampoo specifically formulated for dry hair.

2.

Apply a moisturizing leave-in conditioner. This provides extra hydration to your dry hair shaft and tames your hair's fly-away tendencies. Use a cream version if you hair is thick or curly and a lighter formula designed to increase volume if you have thin hair.

3.

Apply a protein deep conditioner to your hair once a week. To up the shine wattage, combine four drops of pure olive oil to your deep conditioner before applying it to your hair, suggests Roppatte. Wrap your coated tresses in a warm, damp towel for 20 minutes, then rinse out.

4.

Air dry your hair as often as possible. Heat styling is especially damaging to dry hair.

Oily Hair

1.

Use a mild non-detergent shampoo designed for daily use to keep your hair's oil slick in control without diminishing its natural shine. Wash your hair with a scalp-cleansing formula shampoo once or twice a week, recommends Roppatte.

2.

Apply a light conditioner to the ends of your hair a few times a week. If you just can't resist conditioning after every shampoo, use a small amount of an oil-free formula and avoid getting it on your roots.

3.

Spot treat your bangs or roots with dry shampoo or baking soda if they start to look greasy toward the end of the day or before a night out. Sprinkle a small amount of the oil-absorbing powder onto the hair, then brush to remove.

Color-treated Hair

1.

Color-treated hair is more prone to damage, so extra steps are needed to keep it strong and shiny. Wash your hair as infrequently as possible in a mild color-protecting protein shampoo. Try your best to only shampoo your locks twice a week, unless you have oily hair.

2.

Apply a moisturizing color-preserving conditioner after each shampoo. Once a week, use a warm oil or deep-conditioning treatment to keep your hair strands healthy.

3.

Always apply a protective product on your hair before heat styling. Thick- or curly-haired girls need a serum, and mousse is the choice for those with fine or straight hair. Apply a light mist of shine serum after styling to pump up the gleam of your colored mane.
