An American designer of Egyptian Jewish heritage, Isaac Mizrahi is a graduate of New York's High School of Performing Arts and Parson's School of Design. Much to the envy of fashionistas everywhere, Mizrahi began his career working as an apprentice at Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein. Mizrahi unleashed his first collection in 1987 at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. Since then, he's released colorful, stylish collections for Target, Liz Claiborne and his own label.
If you love fashion--yet your budget is more Forever 21 than Versace--chances are you were a fan of Mizrahi's collection for Target. With his affordable lines, Mizrahi proved that fashion could be chic even if your Vuitton is a fake. Mizrahi was with Target from 2002 to early 2008. Fashionistas who couldn't afford high-priced runway collections bought up Mizrahi's collections like there was no tomorrow, and the brand made approximately $300 million each year it sold. Mizrahi was with Liz Claiborne for one year, where he helped revamp the aging brand. Other collaborations include Mizrahi's bridal line for The Aisle New York. Mizrahi's own designer line sells at Bergdorf Goodman and other high-end department stores.
Celebs everywhere are long-time fans of Mizrahi's designs. Fabulous first lady Michelle Obama has worn Mizrahi's designs on numerous occasions. Other celeb fans of Mizrahi's clothes include Chloe Sevigny, Kristin Stewart, Lea Michele, Ashley Green, Selma Blair, Rihanna and Zooey Deschanel. Mizrahi himself is quite the celebrity, having made guest appearances on fashion-related shows like "Sex and the City" and "Ugly Betty." Mizrahi is also the co-host of Bravo's hit "The Fashion Show," along with Kelly Rowland.
Mizrahi's designs range in style from demure and chic to sexy and sparkly. Mizrahi embraces clean lines and bold colors, from ball gowns to corset dresses. His designs are both youthful and colorful, and they don't just stop at clothes. During his Target years, Isaac Mizrahi designed chic and affordable accessories, bedding, pet products and house wares. Mizrahi has also dabbled in costume design for Broadway.
