There are a lot of reasons why you may have coarse hair. You may be able to blame it on genetics, over-processing, over-styling or sometimes just plain bad luck. But once you realize you have coarse hair, there are many things you can do to manage and help correct it so that your hair goes back to looking and feeling healthy, shiny and smooth.
1.
Wash your hair every other day instead of every day. Washing hair too often can actually strip it of natural oils that moisturize your hair and help it stay smooth. When you do wash, use a moisturizing shampoo designed for dry or coarse hair and give your scalp a good massage to help stimulate the follicles while you're at it.
2.
Use a deep conditioner after you shampoo and leave it in your hair for three minutes before rinsing out.
3.
Apply a leave-in conditioner after you get out of the shower. The more you moisturize coarse hair, the better it will be.
4.
Use only alcohol-free styling products and try not to use hot styling tools very much, as the heat only dries out hair and makes it more coarse and dry.
5.
Use a hot-oil treatment two times a week. You can buy hot-oil treatments at most grocery stores or drug stores. Warm up the oil in a cup of hot water according to the product directions and then apply it to dry hair. Cover hair with a plastic shower cap and leave it in for 20 minutes before washing out.
