Having a dry and itchy scalp is uncomfortable, but what's worse is having a dry scalp and greasy hair. It's like a total contradiction! Many of the shampoos sold at drugstores dry your scalp even more and do you really want to be scratching your head when you're out shopping with your girlfriends? Probably not. DIY shampoo can completely solve both your greasy hair and dry scalp problems because it will keep your hair away from damaging chemicals that dry out your scalp and make your hair follicles overcompensate by creating more oil. The best part is, it's easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients on hand.

Basic Moisturizing DIY Shampoo

For this basic moisturizing shampoo, you'll need 1/4 cup each of distilled water, liquid castle soap and aloe vera gel; 1 teaspoon of glycerin and 1/4 teaspoon of jojoba or avocado oil. Just mix all of the ingredients and apply the shampoo as you normally would and allow it to sit in your hair for a couple of minutes then rinse. Store it in a bottle and shake it before using.

DIY Olive Oil Hair Conditioner

If you want to fight a dry scalp fast but still handle your greasy hair, here's a little beauty secret. You can use the above DIY shampoo (or your favorite salon or drugstore brand) to completely kick grease, then you can make an ultra-moisturizing conditioner with one of your kitchen staples -- olive oil. Just add four to five drops of extra virgin olive oil to your favorite conditioner, apply the mix to hair and massage it into your scalp, let it sit for 20 minutes and rinse. Doing this three times a week should cut down on dry scalp and make your hair healthy so it's not overcompensating for dryness by producing excess grease.

DIY Listerine Treatment For Dry Scalp

Add a little more to your at-home shampoo with this kitchen remedy swiped from Lauren Conrad's brilliant stylist. Listerine helps dry scalp and flakes, and it might seem strange but as an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial it does make a little bit of sense. For this recipe mix 1/2 oz. of original formula Listerine and 1/2 oz. of baby oil to soften and soothe your hair and scalp. Shake it up with a bottle and apply to your scalp with cotton balls. Rinse with shampoo after 10 to 15 minutes and you'll be surprised with the results.

Avocado Shampoo Mask

Avocado both moisturizes your hair and scalp and helps repair your damaged hair. To make this shampoo mask, mash up 1 ripe avocado and mix in 2 teaspoons of olive oil. If you have longer hair, double the recipe. Mix the ingredients together using an electric beater until they're whipped and creamy. Mix in 1/4 cup of liquid castle soap. Massage the shampoo into your scalp and hair. Clip up your hair in a shower cap and let it sit for five to 30 minutes, then rinse. Your hair will be shiny and clean and your scalp will be healthy and moisturized.
