Purchased makeup removers can be pricey -- and the chemicals don't do your skin any favors. Sometimes, however, it takes more than a basic face wash to get rid of your makeup at the end of the day -- particularly if you are a devotee of waterproof mascara. Try a homemade formula to remove stubborn mascara, you may be surprised to find that some household products can leave your skin better conditioned than store-bought removers.
Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara avoids runs, smears and disappearing acts brought on by long-term wear as well as crying, sweating and any other wet activity. However, this means the oil-based makeup is harder to remove, because liquids just roll right off. Frequent use of purchased makeup removers, as well as the rubbing and scrubbing it takes to remove waterproof mascara, can damage your eye and the delicate skin surrounding it.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil has been used for years as a makeup remover. Because it is an oil, it works with waterproof mascara to gently remove the product. Extra virgin olive oil contains natural forms of vitamin E which condition the soft tissue underneath the eye while improving the skin's elasticity to improve the signs of aging. Add a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil to a dry cotton ball and gently wipe each eye several times to remove waterproof mascara.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel costs about a dollar and is found in most department stores in the first-aid section. This inexpensive product works as a awesome remover for makeup, including waterproof mascara. Outside of removing oil-based makeup products like waterproof mascara, witch hazel cleanses the skin and removes dirt and other debris from your pores to prevent break-outs. It also restores your skin's pH levels to reduce the appearance of acne.
Combination Remover
Extra virgin olive oil and witch hazel are a perfect pair and can be combined to receive the benefits of both. In a clean, plastic bottle, such as a travel sized shampoo bottle, pour in equal parts witch hazel and extra virgin olive oil. Shake well. Add this combination remover to a cotton ball and gently wipe over your eyes and face to remove your makeup while conditioning, toning and cleansing your skin.
